Clinical Trial of using Umbilical cord Stem Cells for Osteoarthritic Patients

The diagrams below depict the pain intensity reduction and functionality improvement in patients who were treated by the Stem Cell-Based Medicinal Product (a composite of culture-expanded allogeneic human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells and hyaluronic acid hydrogel).

Pain Decreases

The VAS, or the Visual Analogue Scale, is an instrument that is used to measure different symptoms, in this case - pain intensity. It is a straight vertical or horizontal line of fixed length, usually 100 mm. The scores indicate: no pain (0–4 mm), mild pain (5-44 mm), moderate pain (45–74 mm), and severe pain (75–100 mm).

In patients who were treated by Stem Cell-Based Medicinal Product, VAS score for pain intensity improved from 49.1 at pretransplantation to 19.3 at 24 weeks post-transplantation. All participants experienced pain intensity reduction at 3 months post-transplantation. The improvement in pain at 6 months was maintained for 7 years.

Function Improves

The IKDC, or the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form, is a measure of knee function. It is comprised of the patient evaluation of symptoms, sports activity, and overall knee function. The final score is the sum of the individual items transformed to a scaled number in a range of 0 to 100. The higher scores indicate the higher levels of function.

As you can see, the IKDC has also improved from 39.1 at pretransplantation to 63.2 at 24 weeks post-transplantation in all participants at 6 months. These improved scores were maintained without significant deterioration up to 7 years.
